Pinguicula or butterworts are a genus of carnivorous plants that have almost succulent leaves. They have minute glands on their leaves that secrete a sticky fluid that traps prey on contact. Compared with other carnivorous plants with sticky traps – say drosophyllum, byblis or drosear, the trapping power of Pinguicula is not very powerful and the main prey of Pinguicula are small flying insects like fungus gnats and mosquitoes.
